A few days ago, Susan Gardner was hired by the Wikimedia Foundation (nonprofit supporting Wikipedia and other free content projects) as “consultant and special advisor“. Yesterday, Florence Devouard, chair of Wikimedia Foundation Board, announced Mike Godwin was recruited as general counsel and legal coordinator.

Mike Godwin is an American attorney who worked for several organizations such as the Electronic Frontier Foundation or Public Knowledge. He is mostly famous because of the adage bearing his name. The position of general counsel was vacant since Brad Patrick resigned in March 2007.

The Wikimedia Foundation was in desperate need of these two people. The Board of Trustees of the Foundation was overwhelmed by work that should be the Executive Director’s. The foundation was unable to meet expectations from the community in terms of legal advice. When at Public Knowledge, Mike Godwin worked on intellectual property law; his recruitment is definitely a good sign for the foundation.

Welcome Sue and Mike!
